Business plan 2025: Do you still need one?

The classic business plan — pages and pages of tables, market analyses, plans and forecasts. For many, this sounds like an outdated compulsory programme. But is a business plan even necessary today? Or is a pitch deck, a good idea and a little courage enough?

In this article, we take a look at when a Business Plan 2025 really makes sense, what has changed compared to the past — and why it might not be the right thing to do. whether, but about the like goes.

What is a business plan — today?

The business plan used to be a thick PDF for the bank or the authorities. Today, its purpose has changed dramatically:

  • for yourself: Clarity about target group, offer, strategy, income and expenses
  • for partners or investors: create trust and traceability
  • for the tax office or funding programmes: Professional basis

The modern business plan is not a novel, but rather a visual and structured argumentation of your project. Ideally, it should be a dynamic document that evolves with you.

Will I still need a business plan in 2025?

The answer is: it depends.

You need a business plan if.….

  • you are applying for a loan or a grant
  • you work with partners or investors
  • your project is complex or capital-intensive
  • you need a clear strategic framework

You can do without it if …

  • you bootstrap and start alone
  • you start small and flexible
  • you only test first or start on the side
  • you go with MVP and Lean Start

Conclusion: A business plan is not compulsory for everyone, but it is a real help for many. Especially if you need structure or work with others.

What has changed in 2025!

The way in which business plans are drawn up has changed significantly compared to the past:

  • More visual, less text desert (canvas, tables, slides instead of Word documents)
  • Thinking more dynamically: a plan that lives and can be adapted
  • Tool-based: Platforms such as Notion, Canva or AI tools help with structure & implementation
  • Focus on customer benefits instead of internal view

What should not be missing from any business plan in 2025?

Whether for you, your bank or an investor — you should cover this content:

  1. what you do (product/service)
  2. who your target group is
  3. how you earn money (business model)
  4. How to win customers (Marketing & Sales)
  5. what your cost & revenue planning looks like
  6. who you are and what qualifies you
  7. what your next steps are
  8. and very important: your liquidity plan
Without a clear overview of how long your capital will last and what running costs will be incurred, you will quickly fall into the risk trap. A realistic liquidity plan is essential, especially for the first 12–18 months.

The more clearly, compactly and realistically you can present this, the better.

Business plan = start-up aid, not start-up brake

A good business plan is not an unnecessary diversions, but can help you:

  • Recognising errors early
  • Set clear priorities
  • Make more informed decisions
  • Convince others of your idea

He is your Tools for independence, not an administrative monster.

Conclusion: You don’t have to write a business plan — but you should have one

A business plan is not a must, but it is almost always a plus. If you can clearly explain what you intend to do, how you want to earn money and why it can work, you will not only be better prepared — you will also be taken more seriously by others.

Whether as a classic plan or modern canvas: Think about your plan — and record it in a structured way.

If you like, we will be happy to help you set it up or provide you with suitable templates.
